What is an intrapreneur? (and why PNG needs more of them)

To continue to develop, Papua New Guinea will need entrepreneurs willing to push the envelope and think outside the box to solve some of industry’s greatest challenges.

At the Peopleconnexion office, we want to take this one step further ? we need intrapreneurs in PNG to act as role models and transform their organisations. Why?

According to Deloitte Digital, approximately 88% of Fortune 500 companies in 1955 no longer existed in 2015. In a world that seems to be changing faster than ever, being able to adapt to change has never been more important.

We’ve all heard of entrepreneurs, but what is an intrapreneur?

An intrapreneur brings the mentality and spirit of an entrepreneur to a larger organisation. They are not afraid to push the needle forward to improve the companies they work in and challenge the status quo.

Intrapreneurs are self-motivated, proactive and action-oriented people who are comfortable with taking initiative, within the boundaries of an organization, in pursuit of an innovative product or service.

Throughout my experience, the most successful candidates are those that embody these intrapreneurial tendencies, even if they do not know it. They are hungry for new challenges and genuinely care about their role, their organisation and their communities.

They seek out opportunities

No matter their seniority, intrapreneurs looks for business opportunities and new ways to create value. They are always innovating, trying to improve processes and create better experiences for customers and clients. Unless they are in business development or R&D, these activities will not necessarily fall within their job description ? but this won’t stop them.

A commitment to creating positive change is how countries, communities and organisations improve. Developing and keeping these capabilities in Papua New Guinea benefits everyone in the long run.

They know how to engage others

Being able to seek out brilliant ideas is fantastic, but being able to bring others on board with those ideas is even better. In larger organisations with more complex, vertical structures, the ability to meaningfully engage with other is incredibly important.

Intrapreneurs know they cannot possibly achieve everything solo and aren’t afraid to build relationships and encourage teamwork. To do this, they focus on genuine yet professional relationships and understand the importance of mentoring, learning and sharing ideas.

The benefits of mentoring aren’t just intrinsic. Studies of successful corporate mentoring programs have shown they can lead to improved health, motivational and career outcomes. Finding people who are willing to lead the charge within their organisation may create lasting benefits for everyone.

Getting past the buzzword: Intrapreneurship in action

In reality, some of the most innovative leaders in an organisation may not be in executive management. This is why it is so important to have a clear hiring strategy in place to attract the right people and create systems with enough flexibility so they can do what they do best.

For candidates ? searching for an employer that aligns with your ideals and doesn’t shy away from change (especially if it’s from the bottom-up) is key.

A fantastic example of intrapreneurship in action in PNG right now are the learning and development and functions we are seeing created in large organisations, or regular networking events where professionals can share ideas.

We would love to hear your thoughts around this topic. Whether you’re in HR, Finance or even recruitment ? how can we encourage intrapreneurship?
