Candidate’s do a lot of leg work to get to the interview phase and while the same rules apply for virtual interviews, there are extra precautions candidates need to consider to make sure their efforts aren’t jeopardized!
The pandemic has certainly changed a lot about the way we work, and how we conduct interviews is definitely one of them! It’s no longer just about arranging a time and a place and showing up.
Recently, I’ve a witnessed a host of challenges in arranging interviews for candidates: not having sufficient data; trying to connect to internet a minute before the interview; not confirming scheduled interview times; not knowing the right mode of communication, and more.
Any one of these factors has the potential to wash a candidate’s hard work down the drain, without standing a chance to present themselves and their capabilities to a client. For some who turn up late or not at all, clients might reschedule; but for many, second chances aren’t on the table. Like I said, for virtual interviews, many of the same rules apply and making a good first impression is definitely key.
“Failing to plan is planning to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin. This quote stood out to me when thinking about my experience with candidates not putting in the required planning for virtual interviews. So here are my tips!
1. Play it safe – Don’t assume
Always ask for clarity. If you’re unsure about the process, how to access or set-up your virtual interview or of the time and date, always ask. As consultants, it is our job to ensure a seamless interview process between candidates and clients. Always make sure you confirm with consultant’s your availability for the scheduled interview as similarly, consultants can’t assume your confirmation.
2. Plan ahead – Test your device
Test out your device at lease one day prior to your interview. You may not be familiar with the virtual interview platform so this is the time to set-up and familiarize yourself with the platform as well as test your audio and video. Make a test call and choose an appropriate background so your setting looks clean and professional. Don’t make the mistake of waiting three minutes before your interview starts to realise you don’t know how to turn on your mic or worse, your laptop is dead and your charger is missing.
3. Be punctual
Again, punctuality is KEY! As you would with a face-to-face interview, arrive 10-15 minutes early. This means jumping onto the call 10 minutes before your scheduled time. By giving yourself this time, you can ensure you are in a quiet environment with minimum interruptions, ensure your device is charged, running, audio and visual are on and you are ready to go!
4. Be proactive
Prompt and effective communication is so important and sums up the above points. Our consultants are here to ensure your success and to help prepare you as much as possible throughout the process, so be available if and when they reach out and make sure you are proactive in your communication.
5. Be Positive
Above all don’t forget to be positive! Interviews can be a stressful process but once you are sitting there in your call, ready for the interview to start, all that’s left is to let the potential employer know why you would be the best fit for the role! Speak from the heart and have confidence.
It’s important to remember, client interviews are difficult to coordinate. Flexibility in your schedule is required and punctuality is key. Do not miss out on an opportunity for your career by not being prepared!
