Empowering Minds Through Books: A Journey to Tufi in Oro Province

During my recent break in Tufi, a picturesque corner of Oro Province, I had the privilege of experiencing something that left a profound impact on my perspective. As part of our ongoing campaign to support the Buk Bilong Pikinini initiative, I spent time at a local school – an experience that opened my eyes to the stark reality of educational resources in this remote community.

Nestled amidst stunning landscapes, the school welcomed me with warm smiles and an eagerness to share their story. I had the chance to connect with the senior teacher and meet the enthusiastic young minds that form the local school’s cohort. It was during these interactions that I learned of a situation that was both eye-opening and humbling – the absence of a library.

In most educational settings, a library serves as a haven of knowledge, a sanctuary where imaginations flourish and dreams are nurtured. However, for these students, the concept of a library was unique; their library was confined to the pages of the ‘mini library’ within their classrooms. The reality struck me as I stepped into one of the classrooms and saw a handful of fiction books – a stark contrast to the libraries we often take for granted.

The experience left me wondering over the luxuries we often overlook and take for granted. The ability to purchase books, visit a local library, and immerse ourselves in the world of stories is a privilege we seldom acknowledge. It reminded me of a principle dear to the heart of Peopleconnexion – the value of being lifelong leaders. And at that moment, the gift of reading took on a new meaning – a tool that has the potential to create lasting change in the lives of these children.

I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of reading, having spent time in various corners of Africa. The ability to read opens doors to knowledge, empowers minds, and shapes futures. It’s not just about deciphering words on a page; it’s about igniting curiosity, fostering creativity, building bridges to opportunities and ultimately it leads to a career.

This is what inspired our pathways purpose. One book is one, if not more, pathways to a more fulfilling life, career and purpose. As we continue our campaign to raise books for Buk Bilong Pikinini, I urge you to consider the impact a single book can have. If you’re in Brisbane and have the opportunity to contribute, please know that your donation can make a difference. We’ve already made strides, collecting nearly 6,000 books this year alone. But our goal is to do more, to send another 6,000 books to children who hunger for stories that transport them to new worlds and inspire them to dream big.

Every page turned is an opportunity for a child to discover, learn, and grow. Let’s come together and be part of this transformative journey. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, can be the key that unlocks a world of possibilities for these young minds.

Thank you for joining us on this mission to empower minds and shape futures through the magic of reading.
