Manage employee separations positively with Outplacement

Manage employee separations positively with Outplacement

Recently we were working with a group of highly qualified individuals, that had been retrenched due to their operation being run from a different geographical location. They were blindsided by the news, and had always felt that their role was very secure. One of the individuals commented ?The thing is, and I know this sounds silly, I felt so discarded. I was embarrassed. I considered myself a high performer and never imagined that my role would be made redundant. I felt like I had let down my family, my team and my colleagues. I was so over-whelmed.?

In this VUCA world we live in, businesses are facing huge challenges and pressures and are required to pivot and change to ensure that they are able to remain competitive and relevant. This does mean that certain roles are no longer required, are replaced by technology, and this directly impacts the people you have working for you. It is imperative when businesses make these changes, they do the right thing and look after the employees that will be retrenched.

In many cases, it’s employees who are valued and hard-working members of the team that are leaving, so how do you lift your team members up, when you have to let them go?

Many people that find themselves retrenched have a huge dip in confidence, questioning why they are no longer needed, second guessing what they could have done to stay and feeling like they have let their team, family and themselves down. That’s why it is important to make the distinction that impacted employees are not redundant, but rather their role has been made redundant. This differentiation has a big impact on their mindset.

The hallmarks of a positive separation

A positive employee separation can occur when an organisation has a set of processes in place to support staff who are leaving, as well as transparent communication with those staff remaining. This ensures that everyone sees that there has been due process and that is a bonafide redundancy based on the business strategy and financial situation.

Additionally, employees should have access to an outplacement program that will support them during these difficult times. A great outplacement program provides the individual with support so that they don’t feel like they are on the journey on their own and helps individuals to get closer to identifying what their strengths are, what their purpose is and what is important to them

Employee departures aren’t easy. But getting exits right can have a significant influence on your employees leaving and the staff remaining. By proactively supporting employees that are leaving, you can demonstrate that your organisation cares about people and does the right thing. In this way you recognise the contribution of employees and ensure they are empowered to leverage their talents as they transition to a job they love, in a supportive environment.
