Forbes Magazine has ranked Papua New Guinea (PNG) as the 9th most beautiful country in the world out of the top 50.
This is not surprising given the country’s stunningly diverse and dramatic scenery, with a majestic mountainous landscape that pierces the skyline and breathtaking shorelines.
Papua New Guinea is located 160 kilometers north of Australia and is part of a large arc of mountains that stretches from Asia, through Indonesia, and into the South Pacific.
The country is made up of over 600 islands, with nearly 850 languages spoken in the country, making it the most linguistically diverse place on earth.
The highlands of PNG boasts rolling hills and mountains blanketed in the thick, verdant jungle, with waterfalls cascading down steep cliffsides, creating an ethereal and dreamlike atmosphere.
The region is known for its intricate and diverse flora, with vibrant flowers and unique plant life found nowhere else in the world.
The Sepik River, which runs through the country, is considered one of the world’s last great wild rivers and is an important cultural center for the local people.
The country is also home to active volcanoes, such as the Tavurvur in East New Britain Province, and other island provinces including West New Britain, New Ireland, Manus, and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville that boasts some of the world’s most pristine waters and sandy beaches.
The crystal-clear turquoise waters teem with a diverse range of marine life, including tropical fish, turtles, and rays. Some of the beaches are lined with powdery white sand, and palm trees that sway gently in the warm tropical breeze.
Despite its natural beauty, PNG is one of the world’s least-visited countries, which allows it to retain its rough and natural beauty, free of mass tourism and infrastructure.
The low human population and physical remoteness have also allowed many coral reefs in PNG to remain healthy and vibrant, making it a must-visit destination for divers and snorkelers.
However, traveling to PNG does come with its challenges, such as limited infrastructure and services, as well as safety concerns in some areas.
But for those who are willing to take the risk, PNG promises a unique and unforgettable adventure in one of the world’s most beautiful countries.
Here are just a few images from our staff on the ground in PNG, showcasing just some of its expansive beauty:
